Auditory phonemic perception in dyslexia: categorical identification and discrimination of stop consonants.

چکیده
The possibility that phonological confusions may underlie some difficulties in processing written language was investigated using four speech perception tasks. Twelve dyslexic and four normal-reading children identified and discriminated synthetic speech syllables which varied either in voice-onset time (signaling the feature of voicing) or direction of formant transitions (signaling place of articulation). Results indicate that, like normal-reading children and adults, dyslexic children perceive these sounds categorically. Discrimination of the stimuli was limited by their identifiability. It is suggested that linguistic disturbances at other stages of the grapheme to meaning transformation underlie misreading.

Performance of dyslexic children on speech perception tests.
Several researchers who have compared the performance of dyslexic and normal-reading children on a variety of different tasks have suggested that dyslexic children may have subtle deficits in the phonemic analysis of spoken as well as written language. Thus it is of interest to know how children who have extraordinary difficulty learning to read can perform explicitly auditory-phonetic tasks. S...
متن کاملAllophonic mode of speech perception in Dutch children at risk for dyslexia: a longitudinal study.
There is ample evidence that individuals with dyslexia have a phonological deficit. A growing body of research also suggests that individuals with dyslexia have problems with categorical perception, as evidenced by weaker discrimination of between-category differences and better discrimination of within-category differences compared to average readers. Whether the categorical perception problem...
متن کاملAuditory Features Underlying Cross-language Human Capabilities in Stop Consonant Discrimination
For some phonemic distinctions human listeners exhibit a marked cross-language capability, in that they are capable of highly correct classification in relation to sounds (like CVs or VCVs) uttered by speakers of another language. This is particularly true regarding distinctions that are perceived in a more categorical fashion, like that of 3-way PLACE discrimination in stop consonants. It is p...
متن کاملSpeech perception in infants.
Discriminiationi of synthetic speech sounds was studied in 1- and 4-month-old infants. The speech sounds varied along an acoustic dimension previously shown to cue phonemic distinctions among the voiced and voiceless stop consonants in adults. Discriminability was measured by an increase in conditioned response rate to a second speech sound after habituation to the first speech sound. Recovery ...
متن کاملReading fluency and speech perception speed of beginning readers with persistent reading problems: the perception of initial stop consonants and consonant clusters
This study investigated the role of speech perception accuracy and speed in fluent word decoding of reading disabled (RD) children. A same-different phoneme discrimination task with natural speech tested the perception of single consonants and consonant clusters by young but persistent RD children. RD children were slower than chronological age (CA) controls in recognizing identical sounds, sug...
